What is Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates, distinct from mat-based Pilates, involves using the Pilates reformer machine, providing a more dynamic and intense workout by incorporating resistance through its springs. At Grounded, our studio in Oldham, we believe that Reformer Pilates offers numerous advantages over traditional mat-based Pilates.

One of the key benefits of Reformer Pilates is the expanded repertoire of exercises available, offering greater variety and targeting a wider range of muscles. While mat-based Pilates primarily focuses on core strength, Reformer Pilates engages the entire body, including peripheral muscles in the arms and legs. Originating from Joseph Pilates himself in the 1920s, the Pilates reformer machine consists of a bed-like structure with springs, a sliding carriage, and ropes and pulleys.

Despite its initial intimidating appearance, the reformer proves to be an incredibly versatile and effective piece of exercise equipment, as discovered by many at our studio. Through its adjustable springs, Reformer Pilates allows for varying levels of resistance, accommodating individuals of all fitness levels and facilitating rehabilitation for those with injuries or recovering from surgery, such as knee injuries. This horizontal plane of motion reduces vertical loading on the legs, enabling controlled movements to strengthen muscles through a larger range of motion.

Reformer Pilates serves as an excellent cross-training tool for athletes, enhancing core stabilisation, muscle endurance, balance, coordination, and more. Whether you're seeking a challenging workout or recovering from an injury, Reformer Pilates at Grounded provides a versatile and enjoyable fitness experience tailored to your needs.
